Two from the French

A recent article in the Notices lists several new resources for mathematical literature on the web, some of which we’ve added to our links page. Check them out!
For example, NUMDAM (that is, the organization for NUMérisation de Documents Anciens Mathématiques) has placed the entire text of Publications Mathématiques de l’IHÉS (1959-1997) online. In particular, this means that EGA is completely accessible to the entire world in PDF format. The text is even fully searchable! Well done, NUMDAM!
In other French news, we’ve put some photos from Luminy on commalg.org. These were taken during the recent CIRM conference, and show commutative algebraists working and relaxing in one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. Go see!

Cocoyoc, Mexico

The “XV Coloquio Latinoamericao de Algebra” will take place in Cocoyoc, Mexico, July 20-25.
The highlight of the conference consists of 18 plenary addresses delivered by distinguished researchers in various areas of mainstream Algebra. The two plenary talks in Commutative Algebra will be delivered by Wolmer Vasconcelos and Aron Simis.
In addition to the plenary addresses there will be 9 special sessions in different areas of Algebra, including one in commutative algebra.

Snowbird, UT

There will be a Joint Summer Research Conference titled “Commutative Algebra: Presentations by Young Researchers”, at the Snowbird Summer Resort in Snowbird, Utah, July 20-24, 2003.
The goal of the conference is to bring together young researchers in several areas of commutative algebra, in order to provide a showcase for important new ideas and to encourage collaboration among participants. All research talks will be given by mathematically young researchers, primarily those no more than two or three years beyond the Ph.D. and graduate students in their final year of study. The conference will focus on the following topics: (1) homological methods in commutative algebra, (2) characteristic p methods and tight closure, (3) combinatorics and commutative algebra, (4) representation theory of local rings. Each topic will be introduced by an expository talk, and informal discussions will follow the research talks.
The following have tentatively agreed to give expository talks and/or lead discussion sessions:

  • Juergen Herzog, Universität Essen
  • Craig Huneke, University of Kansas
  • Irena Peeva, Purdue University
  • Karen Smith, University of Michigan
  • Roger Wiegand, University of Nebraska

In order to ensure ample time for informal discussions and mathematical interaction, there will be no contributed talks. The total number of research talks will be 30 – 35. It is expected that some support will be available for those wishing to attend talks and participate in the informal discussions. For further information, contact Roger Wiegand.

Lisbon, Portugal (ICAMR)

The International Conference on Algebras, Modules and Rings will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 14 July to 18 July 2003. The conference is organized by Centro de Álgebra da Universidade de Lisboa, in memory of Professor António Almeida Costa, on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

Lisbon, Portugal (LCCA)

The Lisbon Conference on Commutative Algebra will be held June 23-27, 2003 in Lisbon, Portugal.
The conference will focus on Commutative Algebra with some emphasis in homological methods. There will be 14 talks of 50 minutes each given by some of the most outstanding researchers in the field, and up to 26 talks of 35 minutes each (in parallel sessions).
This meeting will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico, Avenida Rovisco Pais, 1096-001 Lisboa, Portugal, immediately after the First Joint Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (Sevilla, Spain, June 18-21 2003, and where there will be several special sessions in areas related to Commutative Algebra).

Sevilla, Spain

The first Joint Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Real Sociedad Matemática Española will take place in Sevilla, Spain on June 18-21, 2003. See the conference website (also available en español) for general information about the conference.
There will be (at least) three Special Sessions of possible interest to commutative algebraists:

  • Special Session on Commutative Algebra: Geometric, Homological, Combinatorial and Computational Aspects, organized by Alberto Corso (University of Kentucky), Philippe Gimenez (Universidad de Valladolid), and Santiago Zarzuela (Universitat de Barcelona).
  • Special Session on Differential Structures and Homological Methods in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, organized by Gennady Lyubeznik (University of Minnesota) and Luis Narvaez-Macarro (Universidad de Sevilla).
  • Special Session on Ring Theory and Related Topics, organized by Jose Gomez-Torrecillas (University of Granada), Pedro Antonio Guil Asensio (University of Murcia), Sergio R. Lopez-Permouth (Ohio University), and Blas Torrecillas (University of Almeria).
