Dear all,
We are happy to announce the summer course “Hyperplane arrangements and computations with CoCoA” 13-17th August, 2018 (Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan). More information can be found on the following websites:
- http://cocoa.dima.unige.it/conference/cocoa2018/
This summer course is part of the “Hokkaido Summer Institute 2018” program:
Lecturers:
- John Abbott (University of Genova)
- Anna Maria Bigatti (University of Genova)
- Elisa Palezzato (Hokkaido University)
- Michele Torielli (Hokkaido University)
- Masahiko Yoshinaga (Hokkaido University)
This course, via traditional and computer sessions, will introduce the
basic theory of hyperplane arrangements and it will teach how to compute
some of their invariants using the computer algebra system CoCoA.
The course is aimed at Master and PhD students in mathematics, and
gives 2 credits (some exercises will be assigned during the course).
The registration for students outside Hokkaido closes at the end of
February. The tuition fee is 29 600 JPY, but is free for partner
Universities. Accommodation for registered students is available on
campus at very cheap rates. See our web page for details.
This registration process is only for Master and PhD students, but we
also welcome any other type of participants.
Please contact Michele Torielli if you wish to attend.
Unfortunately we cannot offer any financial support, except for
Italian participants members of “GNSAGA – Gruppo Nazionale per le Strutture
Algebriche, Geometriche e le loro Applicazioni”.
Please contact Anna Maria Bigatti if you wish to apply.

Graduate Summer School in Algebraic Group Actions, McMaster University
Graduate Summer School in Algebraic Group Actions
June 11 – 15, 2018, McMaster University
One of the goals of this summer school is to capitalize on the successful Fields Institute “Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry” Major Thematic Program in Fall 2016 and to offer beginning graduate students a chance to get an in-depth introduction to some of the exciting topics within Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry during the week before the Retrospective Workshop (to be held June 18–22, 2018 at the Fields Institute) on the same theme.
Lecturers
– Kiumars Kaveh (University of Pittsburgh)
– Johannes Hofscheier (McMaster)
Dr. Kaveh and Dr. Hofscheier will each give a 5-day series of lectures on these topics of interest to Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry. We expect Dr. Kaveh to focus on Newton-Okounkov bodies and tropical geometry, with Dr. Hofscheier focusing primarily on spherical geometry. Lectures will be held in the morning, with problem sessions and informal discussions in the afternoon.
Some funding is available for local expenses. For the latest information on the workshop, and to apply for funding, please see

Macaulay2 Workshop, Leipzig
A Macaulay2 workshop will take place at Max Planck Institute in Leipzig in 2018 from Monday June 4th to Friday June 8th. The purpose of the workshop is to bring the Macaulay2 developers Dan Grayson and Mike Stillman together with those who would like to share or to develop their skills on Macaulay2. More information about registration for this workshop will be posted on the workshop webpage:

KUMUNUjr, 2018 (Dates Changed)
The seventh annual KUMUNU jr will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, April 28-29, 2018. Inspired by the success of the KUMUNU algebra conferences in the midwest, KUMUNU jr seeks to promote interaction of graduate students and post docs in the area of commutative algebra. This conference is a forum for students and post docs to share their ideas with others and to initiate collaboration. If you would like to register or more information, please see the conference website or contact one of the organizers.

Macaulay2 Workshop, Wisconsin
We will hold a workshop at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, April 14-18, 2018, focused on creating exciting new packages for Macaulay2 by bringing together developers and users of all skill levels and experience. This is organized by Juliette Bruce, Daniel Erman, Steven Sam, and Jay Yang. We are applying for NSF funding to support participants. If funding is not approved we will likely hold a smaller workshop, but will re-evaluate if this occurs. Here’s the link:
