We are deeply sad to tell the community of the passing of Ragnar-Olaf Buchweitz, in Toronto on November 11 2017.
Ragnar made deep and influential contributions to an incredible range of topics, including singularity theory, deformations, commutative and noncommutative algebra, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. He was a generous mentor and advisor of graduate students, and a particular friend to the people behind this website. His passing is a great loss to our community.

i really shocked by that sad news i cant believe but its reality he has gone .Ragnar soul will reached in peacefull heaven .i always remember him deep heart felt condolence .

So sorry for this loss especially as he should have had many more years left. Did he do a lot of research on his family name of Buchweitz? my mother in law was Esther Buchweitz Chapell who father was Albert F Buchweitz 1872-1962. Albert was born in Germany, lived in Wisconsin and then moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. I am looking for any genealogy on the Buchweitz name.

Special thoughts for Ragnar,
Admittedly, I had to look up the definition of commutative algebra. Needless to say, I am not from this academic community. Ragnar was my boss for a number of years while he was dean at the University of Toronto. He was a gentleman and an exceptional human being. I will miss him.
